Victorias lockdown expected to be extended after state records 92 new coronavirus cases
Victorian Premier Dan Andrews has confirmed the stateâs sixth lockdown will be extended as another 92 cases are recorded â" the most in a year.
Mystery cases not yet linked to the rest of the outbreak jumped by 31 and health authorities are not yet sure how many were infectious in the community.
The cases were diagnosed from 51,030 test results, while 31,436 vaccine doses were administered on Saturday. There are 773 active cases across the state.
Mr Andrews announced during Sundayâs Covid update the state had recorded far too many cases to consider ending lockdown on Thursday.
âObviously with almost 100 cases today, where many of them remain mysteries, many of them were out in the community during their infectious period, it is not going to be possible for us to open up our Victorian community in just a couple of daysâ time,â he said.

The Premier said it was too early to provide details on when the lockdown will be extended too and what restrictions will remain in place.
Mr Andrews also urged residents not to ignore Covid-19 symptoms and warned not to waste time coming forward to get a test.
âWe have people from all age groups in our hospitals at the moment and some of them are gravely ill. If that doesnât convince you, have a look at whatâs happening in Sydney, have a look at whatâs happening in other parts of the world,â he said.
âThis is not a good thing to get. The key point is you can make a difference, you can take control of this. If youâve got symptoms, get tested and get tested quickly.â
There are currently 44 people hospitalised with Covid-19 including 13 in intensive care and nine people on ventilators.
The latest cases include nine linked to the Shepparton outbreak, 12 linked to the Broadmeadows and nine linked to Newport.
Another nine cases are household contacts linked to earlier school outbreaks, with four cases linked to the Woolworths in Altona North, one case in a Flinders Street apartment building and one linked to Port Melbourne.
The premier said 80 per cent of the stateâs population aged between 60 and 69 had received their first dose of a vaccine and 86 per cent of those aged 70 and over have had one jab.
âThese are very, very strong numbers, and those who are most vulnerable, although having said that, anybody is vulnerable to significant illness, to severe illness if they are not vaccinated,â he said.
Sixty per cent of the states active cases are under the age of 30 and there are nearly 150 children under the age of 10 infected with the virus.
The series of record case spikes has a group of MPs pushing for Mr Andrews to concede a zero-Covid target is unrealistic and lift some of the harsher restrictions.
Senior ministers told the Sunday Herald Sun residents and businesses should hold little hope of coming out of the scheduled end to lockdown on September 2, given the rate at which the virus is spreading.
Concerns were flagged on Saturday when wastewater tests found virus fragments in suburbs between Mordialloc and Seaford, suggesting there were undetected cases active in Melbourneâs southeast.
The state recorded 64 new Covid-19 cases on Saturday â" with half of those infectious while in the community.
Of the 64 cases, four infections were identified in Port Melbourne, with Covid-19 response commander Jeroen Weimar directing anyone who attended the new Tier 1 exposure sites to get tested immediately.
The health advice applies to anyone who attended the Port Melbourne Auto Mega Warehouse and Prestige Hand Carwash from August 21 to August 27 between the times of 12am and 11.59pm.
Andrews government ministers are divided over whether some of the harsher lockdown restrictions â" including curfew and a ban on playgrounds â" should be removed despite steady Covid cases (man practicing golf in Carlton on Saturday)
Ten Labor ministers and backbenchers spoke to The Sunday Age about Victoriaâs lockdown laws, as fears grow over the high number of mystery cases and people infectious in the community recorded each day this week.
A majority of the MPs said some of the stateâs more controversial measures â" including the curfew and playground ban â" should remain until Victoria is able to reduce the amount of infectious people in the community to zero.
But three MPs told the publication they believed some of the restrictions could be eased without a serious spike in cases.
âI donât see us getting to zero. So can we allow some limited things like allowing double-vaxxed people to visit loved ones or relatives in aged care under very controlled rules?â one senior MP said.
âHow can we take the pressure off to make peopleâs lives easier?â asked another in favour of a lighter lockdown.
Health Minister Martin Foley said Victoria would not follow NSWâs lead and ease some restrictions while the state was still recording an increase in cases.
A raft of Tier 2 exposure sites were also identified on Saturday spanning from inner and outer northern suburbs and western suburbs.
Sidestepping questions about when the lockdown might end, Mr Weimar said his team was instead focusing on âgetting this outbreak under controlâ.
He said with Victoria not due to hit a 70 per cent vaccination rate until November, the only way to end the lockdown was to stop community transmission from emerging clusters â" such as the four new Covid cases detected at Port Melbourne â" with a lockdown.

Prestige Carwash in Port Melbourne (pictured) was listed as a Tier 1 exposure site â" anyone who attended at the listed date and times must immediately get tested isolate for 14 days

âIâm completely focused on how do we respond to outbreaks and get them under control so we can get our lives back in spring,â he said.
Any change to âpolicy settingsâ was a matter for chief health officer Brett Sutton, he said.
Mr Weimar said respecting the lockdown rules would give Victorians the best chance of having the lockdown end on time.
âThatâs why the lockdown is there, itâs worked every time weâve done it, itâs always stopped these outbreaks in their tracks,â he said.
âRight now we still have an opportunity to run it to ground.â
Of the new cases recorded on Saturday, 49 are linked to existing infections in the current outbreak and there are 15 âmysteryâ cases where the source is not yet known. There are currently 778 active cases in Victoria.
Victorians took 55,333 Covid tests on Friday â" a jump of nearly 5,000 on the previous day â" and 35,753 vaccines doses were administered.
Regional Victoria followed the capital into lockdown on August 21 after a spike in community transmissions.
Victoriaâs lockdown â" which is due to end on September 2 â" is likely to be extended for at least a week as health authorities scramble to contain outbreaks (ADF are seen outside a house in Shepparton)
Over half the stateâs Covid-19 cases are in people aged 30 and under and nearly 150 children under 10 with the infection.
There are currently 42 hospitalisations with 13 occupying the intensive care unit and eight requiring ventilators.
Almost 20,000 Victorians were in isolation as close contacts with an additional 15,000 secondary, Mr Weimar said.
